General:- This 8.2 mile circular
route is very much a walk of two halves; a stretch along the Kennett
& Avon canal towpath and a section through Savernake forest.
Wiltshire has very little
woodland and Savernake is it's largest. It's a good example of ancient woodland,
passing through the dense
undergrowth on a sunny day gives a clear example of how light and
shade generate the unique quiet, eerie,
brooding content of a genuine ancient woodland.
In stark contrast is the canal. Nowadays it is hard to imagine it as
a major highway transporting goods from London to Bristol but that's what it was, the M4 of the
1800's! (GPS
length 7.48 miles). Pub at the end.
How to get there: Take the A346
Marlborough to Burbage road. At SU 2161 6477 take minor road signposted
to Wootten Rivers. As you enter village fork left @ SU1958 6328. Pass
pub on left and park by the church wall @ SU 1971 6293.
