Calstone Combes SMALLGRAIN PLANTATION PICNIC SITE to CALSTONE COMBES
The Wansdyke is a very deep ditch dug between late 4th century and 7th century AD. try Robert Vermaat's excellent website at www.wansdyke21.org.uk At waypoint 7 you cross the Roman road to Bath and waypoint 8 takes you onto the old stage coach road to Bath, close by is the modern tarmac road to Bath. Why have three separate roads going to the same destination, why not simply upgrade the original, hadn't they heard of cones? Well lucky them! We have had isolated reports of a notice on the stile at waypoint 6 saying you cannot continue across the field. The sign is illegal, ignore it. In fact the farmer should not plough the path at all! If it happens send a complaint to rightofway@wiltshire.gov.uk How to get there:- Turn off the A4 1.4 miles east of Calne where you see a brown picnic site sign to Smallgrain Plantation at SU 0158 6972. Follow the road up the hill. At the top on the left is the picnic site. Be careful not to miss it, there is no warning and you only see it at the last minute. If you reach the golf club you have gone too far.
