The woodland approaching waypoint 3 is an abandoned quarry. The path zig zags through half hidden remains of houses and stone blocks covered with moss giving the wood a ghostly feel, there is a hint that something lurks! The inclined plane at waypoint 3 is the remains of a lift system to transport stone from the quarry down to barges waiting on the canal. Sadly I know little of the Sham Castle other than to say it is a folly built to be viewed from the city centre. (GPS length 5.14 miles). No pub. How to get there: From the city centre go up Bathwick Hill following signs to the University. At T junction turn right onto Oakley Rd, at next T junction go left onto Claverton Down Rd. After 0.5 miles go left onto Norwood Avenue and take next right onto The Avenue. Park in the lay-by opposite the dog's home, Sunday only. Weekdays continue straight on at Norwood Ave onto Convocation Avenue & park in university pay & display (on Saturday use free park & ride car park). Walk back down Convocation Ave to The Avenue on left, straight on to dogs home.
