The woodland around waypoint 3 has a ghostly appearance, the path zig zags through half hidden remains of houses and strange stone blocks covered with moss, there is a hint that something lurks! In fact it is an abandoned quarry but I like the mystical theory, a real "Lord of the Rings set ready for a few Orcs. The inclined plane at waypoint 3 is the remains of a lift system to transport stone from the quarry down to barges waiting on the canal. If you look carefully you can still see where the cables have cut into the stone. Sadly I know little of the Sham Castle other than to say it is a folly, built to be viewed from the city centre, but by whom? You get a good view of the gasometer from here, Bath's worst architectural blight. There is talk of making the gasometer a listed building, now that's what I call folly! Bath university is a centre of excellence for sport. It has an excellent athletics track but more bizarre is the bob run where you can see them practice their sledge starts. (GPS length 5.14 miles). No pub. How to get there: Park in the lay-by opposite the dog's home near the University.
